Oil price volatility spooked markets. Few months ago, when Brent price was storming through 80$/bbl few were strongly opposing the upward momentum, agreeing with rising prices. But just before the year end – the oil price collapsed and most of the commentators have found a reason or two to predict lower levels for oil price ahead.
30$ drop in the oil price has caused some downward revisions of forecasts. According to Reuters: analysts have slashed forecast for 2019 to 67$/bbl from 70$/bbl for WTI. Brent forecast was downgraded to 74$/bbl 76$/bbl. Most frequently cited negative factors for downgrade of forecast are return of the unconventional (shale and ethanol) oil in the US as well as recovering production in Libya and Nigeria as well as the end of the driving season. While supporting factors for the oil price is OPEC cut and stricter compliance with OPEC production quotas as well as economic growth in the US.
Sharp Rise In OVX Volatility
DXY Supportive of Higher Oil Prices
US dollar via DXY Index had been supportive of lower oil prices. Dollar was stronger and rising all the way through 2018 yet despite dollar appreciation oil price continued higher as well. Only in the end of 2018 when the DXY ticked down following FOMC statements on less aggressive FED balance sheet normalization and delayed future rate hikes some risk appetite returned to markets and oil price received a nice and timely support.
But while on a shorter time series anticorrelation between dollar and oil price sometimes breaks down, the longer time spans show that anticorrelation is generally there. Thus dollar was rising in 2014-2014 and the oil price was under pressure. Dollar was weaker in 2017 through mid of 2018 and oil price has rebounded. The turnaround in dollar in the mid of 2018 had caused a collapse in oil price albeit with some delay.
Although the latest FOMC comments take off some pressure off the dollar strength it is unlikely that dollar will be generally weaker in the next few years, so it is likely to keep negative pressure on oil price.
Further dollar strength will be taken negative in our village, oil price is linked to a dollar and with more expensive dollar our village folks will be able to buy less dollars and hence less oil.

A combination of factors leads folks in our village to bet on lower oil prices in 2019. They forecast WTI at 48$/bbl and Brent at 53$/bbl in 2019. They site factors such as

- neutral or stronger US dollars
- pressure from alternatives and GTL
- tougher environmental standards and pressure from electric vehicles and hybrids
- new technology other energy sources
